EXCERPT – Chapter Six – Brazilian School

Edison, Rudolfo and Gracie - 1940

Edison, Rudolfo and Gracie - 1940

For the first two months at Aunt Martha’s local schoolchildren were on vacation from school. But by March, classes resumed and continued for the next four months. Dorothy and I attended the nearby public school with our cousins Edison, Rudolfo and Albertina. We were thrown headfirst into Brazilian culture. Not one word of English was spoken in our daily lives, except our parents. —-The upside of all this was that Dorothy and I mastered Portuguese quickly. Though we quarreled as much as ever, Dorothy and I spent more time together during these months at Martha’s than ever before. We had to, since often we were each other’s only source of easy communicatio.

 Graceann’s Comments

In this picture I was I had just turned six years old.  Edison who was close to my age, was my constant companion. He was also very patient in helping me with my Portuguese. This new language came very easy for Dorothy, and in a very short while she was speaking with only a slight accent. I had a much harder time with this strange language. We attended school every morning, and even on Saturdays. School went from March until the end of June, then we had winter vacation during the month of July. In August we returned to school until December, when the summer vacation and Christmas Holidays started. This school schedule continued essentially the same for the whole time we lived in Brazil.
